A crucial aspect of this mental game is self-talk, the internal dialogue we have with ourselves. It encompasses statements, phrases, or cue words addressed to oneself, which can be automatic or deliberate, spoken aloud or silently, and carry either a positive or negative tone. Self-talk serves to interpret feelings and perceptions, regulate cognitions, and provide instructions and reinforcement.

Different Types of Self-Talk

Self-talk is a multi-dimensional phenomenon, categorised by several key characteristics:

Valence (Positive vs. Negative): This refers to the content’s tone.

Positive self-talk is encouraging, offers praise, and builds confidence, promoting positive mental and emotional states. People have reported feeling better and more motivated as their positive self-dialogue increased.

Negative self-talk involves criticism, is inappropriate, irrational, and can produce anxiety. While negative internal dialogue can adversely affect performance, it’s noteworthy that some athletes may interpret their negative self-talk as motivating.

Function (Instructional vs. Motivational): This describes the purpose self-talk serves.

Instructional self-talk helps with learning or executing specific skills, focusing attention, and implementing strategies. For instance, a runner might use “concentrate on what you have to do right now”.

Motivational self-talk is linked to confidence, arousal control, and sustaining effort and drive. Examples include “I can do it” or “Do your best”.

Overtness (Overt vs. Covert): Self-talk can be spoken aloud (overt) or occur silently in one’s head (covert).

The Benefits of Positive Self-Talk on Performance

Research consistently indicates that self-talk, particularly positive self-talk, is beneficial for enhancing performance. The benefits extend across various aspects of performance and well-being:

Mental Health and Motivation: Positive self-talk is considered an essential strategy for protecting mental health. It increases motivation to return to sports, improves self-awareness, and aids self-knowledge, especially for injured athletes.

Cognitive Enhancement: Self-talk improves concentration and attentional control, helping individuals focus on task-relevant stimuli and reducing distracting thoughts. This is particularly relevant for those in the early stages of learning a skill.

Boosting Self-Confidence and Self-Efficacy: Positive self-talk acts as a form of self-persuasion, significantly increasing self-confidence and self-efficacy (belief in one’s capabilities). This heightened belief influences effort and persistence, even in the face of setbacks.

Affective Regulation: Self-talk helps decrease cognitive anxiety and promotes positive emotional states.
