Description
Self-Talk for Beginners: Take Control of Your Inner Voice
Every performer talks to themselves, whether they realise it or not. The question isn’t whether you use self-talk, it’s whether the voice in your head is helping you or holding you back.
This course is designed for anyone taking part in sport or other performance domains — the arts, music, dance, and beyond — who wants to start using self-talk intentionally and effectively. It doesn’t matter what level you’re performing at or how experienced you are in your discipline; if you’re new to working with self-talk as a skill, this course meets you where you are.
What you’ll learn:
- What self-talk actually is, and why it plays such a powerful role in performance
- The two core types of self-talk, instructional and motivational, and the distinct purpose each one serves
- When and how to apply instructional self-talk to sharpen focus, technique, and execution
- When and how to apply motivational self-talk to build confidence, manage effort, and stay resilient under pressure
- How to start noticing and shaping your own self-talk patterns in training and performance settings
Who this course is for:
Beginners to self-talk, full stop. You might be an athlete, a dancer, a musician, an actor, or someone performing in any high-pressure setting. You don’t need any background in sport psychology or prior experience working with self-talk techniques — just a willingness to pay attention to your own thinking and start experimenting.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Recognise instructional vs. motivational self-talk in the moment
- Choose the right type of self-talk for the right situation
- Begin building a personal self-talk toolkit you can carry into any performance context
Your inner voice is already talking. This course helps you make sure it’s saying the right things.
